50k Israeli students in smart classes: Israel, World ORT, Jewish donors equip northern classrooms

Israeli high schools are now teaching students in “smart” classes using new technology to improve the country’s educational methods. Three hundred classrooms and over 50000 students in northern Israel have converted, and JN1′s Sivan Raviv went to Tirat Carmel to talk to students and organisers. Israel’s goal is to reduce the education gap between central Israel and the periphery. Upon completion of this $20 million USD project, roughly 100000 students will be learning in “smart” classes funded by international Jewish donors in partnership with the Israeli government and World ORT. Avi Ganon, Director General of World ORT Israel, said, “We are trying to change the educational culture inside the schools and to encourage the teachers and the students to use the best technology, to be a better teacher, to be better students. The content of the educational material is the same, we are just providing this new method so that the teacher and the child can be speaking one language, in one technology.” Shelly Yona, a Schiffman High School teacher, told us, “It’s a whole new idea of taking out the books and bringing in computers and technology… The interactive board is the main thing that allows me to use the Internet online in class. We have the tablet that allows me to write upon it, and all the class can see it on the board. I can go with the tablet, it’s wireless, so I can go with it in the classroom explain something to the student in the back of the class, write something
